A documentary about the nationwide search for three young actors to share the lead role in Broadway's Billy Elliot the Musical offers viewers an exclusive look at how David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish were chosen to play Billy Elliot after a year-long national talent search that drew thousands of hopefuls from all over the country. Auditions were held in cities across the country and all three of the Broadway Billys, along with twelve other finalists, underwent a grueling ten day callback last summer in New York City during which director Stephen Daldry and choreographer Peter Darling worked with them extensively.

Actually, Trent auditioned for the show, and they told him that because it was going to be a while before the broadway version he should go play billy in the london version. He went to London without his family. He lived in a Billy House with the rest of the kids. He performed for about 6 months in London until December 2007, then he came back to start rehearsing for the broadway show!
i am so lucky to see the amazing billys on the internet i live in scotland and i'm 75 so cant travel..they are all so talented and give me so much plesure to watch them and also many other scens from the musical good luck boys and god bless.. and i know you all have a great future..but you will never grow old on the internet.. we so lucky
It seems like they changed a bit of the choreography when they brought it to Broadway? I don't remember the last bit in this part (or maybe I just have horrendous memory).
Yep he heard about the auditions for Billy in London so his family moved there with him, then i think when he heard that they were having auditions here he came back and tried out.

yes he first did shows there then he came back to the U.S and got the part of Billy here and i think he still does shows.
