I'm wondering, if this group of meerkats are habituated to humans, shouldn't they be studying either a different group of meerkats or meerkats in a different area? wouldn't these meerkats have not altered their normal behaviour around humans? i.e. seeing them as not a threat.

Not usually. They are used to humans because that group of meerkats has been studied extensively by scientists for over 20 years, so they probably view them as weird looking, giant meerkats.
